Thailand’s activities of construction and infrastructure development on Cambodian territory violate international law, International Court of Justice rulings, the US/ASEAN-brokered ceasefire agreement and Cambodia’s sovereignty. These are not circumstances open for creative interpretation or debate—they are facts and there seem to be only two outcomes that can come from these facts. Either Thailand eventually reconsiders these actions and begins to work towards a peaceful resolution to the border dispute or Thailand all but guarantees the continuation of what has become a multi-generational struggle between neighbors. Thailand’s aggressive nationalistic approach to relations with Cambodia is a strategy that is destined to bring nothing but suffering to both countries and the entire region.
